Awaken, Ubuntu Continent
The shine from within and from below of
Africanness, humaneness, morality, compassion
and selfless concern
for one's fellow women and men
Awaken, people of Africa, people of the world
Let us climb the rock with great felicity and energy
Let us rediscover indigenous knowledge
deeply entrenched in the bedrock to free shackles, scourges
of oppression, hunger, ignorance, disease, corruption,
war
for transmitting cultural consciousness
re-awakening traditional values, languages, dignity,
identity
in the spirit of the African Renaissance
the wind under our wings
refreshed by the waters of one spring
revived by the breathe of one mind
strengthened by the rays of one sun
that can only
be healed by the sagacity of our ancestors
- flowers of one human-wisdom-garden
Generation to generations
awaken, our ancestors
awaken, old people
awaken, the children
Did the wind of Ubuntu bomuntu stop
- that which drives the clouds -
for each one, teach one?
Siballi (padda-padda) Kgobetsi
Dedicated to my father
who planted in my poetic garden the seed of Ubuntu
